Stan Maupin spent most of his career as an entrepreneur founding and supporting new businesses and organizations in industries as diverse as genetic microbiology and used auto parts. But he didn’t think of himself as creative until he discovered his interest in photography while working from home due to COVID-19.
Stan focuses on taking photographs of places and things that are all around us, but we seldom, if ever, are able to see them. He hunts for the darkest sky in the middle of the night so that we can experience the Milky Way. He spends hours in the sun in July so we can see the colors created by sunlight streaming through the wings of a hummingbird. And he also looks for just the right spot to capture a sunset or other scene others might only see through the windshield while stuck in traffic.
Today, Stan still considers himself a beginner, but his photographs have been selected for exhibit by local galleries and have won several awards including a 3rd Place among more than 1,500 entries in the Washington Post's 2022 Travel Photo Contest. His work with hummingbird "prisms" has also been highlighted in several national and international photography online magazines. He currently is an artist-in-residence at Crossroads Art Center, and his work is available through the Center's Gallery at 2016 Staples Mill Road in Richmond, VA or on its website.
Stan is a native of Charlottesville, VA and attended the University of Virginia where he earned a BA in American Government and an MBA from the Darden School of Business.
Stan is a founder and currently manages "Encorepreneur", an informal group of business, civic, and non-profit leaders that has been conducting a monthly speaker's program for more than 8 years. The group has hosted more than 100 events with an average attendance in excess of 200 per event. If you would like to learn more about Encorepreneur, or to join the mailing list and receive invitations to future events, visit www.encorepreneur.net.
Stan spent his career as a serial entrepreneur with more than 35 years of experience founding, managing, and providing high impact financial and strategic consulting to individuals, early-stage businesses, and organizations involved or planning major transactions and transitions.
Following eight years as a “Big Five” consultant, Stan was a founder of Office America, a retail concept that grew to annual sales of more than $70 million. His clients included many successful technology companies including the first US company to clone a mammal and Richmond’s first publicly traded biotechnology company. Two of the companies founded by Stan and his colleagues grew to more than $50 million in annual sales in less than 3 years.
Stan has been an active leader in many non-profit civic and business advocacy organizations in Virginia. He is a co-founder and Board member of both the Greater Richmond Technology Council (RichTech) and the Richmond Venture Forum. He was also a founder and first Chairman of the Virginia Technology Alliance, the group formed to coordinate the activities of Virginia’s 10 regional technology councils. Along with leaders such as Governor George Allen, Gary LeClair and former VCU president Gene Trani, Stan has been awarded the annual Leadership Award by RichTech, and he was also named one of the Richmond Area’s "Top 25 Entrepreneurs of the Last 25 Years" by the Venture Forum.
Stan has also been very active in Virginia politics in both a volunteer and a professional basis for Republican and, more recently for Democrat candidates. He served as treasurer or senior adviser to more than a dozen campaigns for the US Congress, the US Senate, and Governor of Virginia. He served as Deputy Director of Virginians for Warner during Senator Mark Warner's successful governor's race. Most recently, he was active in Rep. Abigail Spanberger's primary and general election campaigns for Congress and is currently a member of Rep. Spanberger's Leadership Council. He has served on a number of boards and advisory panels in state and local government and assisted the transition teams of both the Gilmore and Warner administrations.
Stan is an accomplished writer, having served as the Executive Publisher of Richmond Ventures and Technology Virginia magazines. He also edited and published 10,000 Memories, a 250-page compilation of more than 600 memories submitted by the former students of a Charlottesville educator in celebration of his influence on more than 10,000 graduates.
